About Wollongong City

Wollongong City is the largest of the Illawarra’s three council areas, and home to the region’s main city centre, its university and its port.

The northern suburbs

From Helensburgh and Stanwell Park down through Coalcliff, Clifton, Austinmer, Thirroul, Bulli and Woonona, the northern suburbs are a string of beach villages along Grand Pacific Drive, which crosses the Sea Cliff Bridge. Bald Hill lookout at Stanwell Tops is a favourite with hang gliders and sightseers.

The city centre

The CBD is built around Crown Street Mall and Wollongong Central, with cafes, bars and restaurants running down to the foreshore. The Blue Mile walk links North Beach, the harbour and Flagstaff Point. Wollongong is the only spot on Australia’s east coast with two lighthouses.

West and south

Figtree, Unanderra and Dapto sit below Mount Keira and Mount Kembla, with the West Dapto growth area adding new neighbourhoods. Further south, Port Kembla, Warrawong and Windang lead to the shores of Lake Illawarra. Nan Tien Temple at Berkeley is often described as the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere.

Getting around

The South Coast Line runs through most suburbs with direct trains to Sydney, plus a branch line to Port Kembla. The M1 Princes Motorway links the area to Sydney, and a shared cycleway follows the coast from Thirroul through Wollongong to Lake Illawarra.
